I was really looking forward to reading this book by its description, however I'm halfway through and I'm done. I'm finding myself skipping entire chapters that are entirely made up of email questions, google searches, and fantasy musings. If you've read the book, you know exactly what I mean. I actually like the story when it's told in traditional form, but this other means of storytelling is nothing short of tedious and slightly gimmicky. I'm an avid reader of all genres, and honestly I was looking for a light and fun summer read when I chose this book. This is just not one that I enjoyed.

Wife 22 A Novel Melanie Gideon 9780345527950 Books Reviews

The plot and characters were too one dimensional and predictable. A troubled marriage and two people in mid-life crises heading for a train wreck of a divorce. The wife participates in a marriage survey and falls for the anonymous researcher but she isn't very likeable to begin with. She is selfish, overly emotional, overbearing, and pushy. The researcher is kind and gentle and it's hard to see what he sees in her. She isn't a good friend - blowing off her support group and her oldest friends in favor of this survey and the researcher, whom she has never met. I did enjoy the literary device using social media to engage the reader and the characters. But the device was used to the sacrifice of character development. Enjoyable to read in parts, not a great story overall.
6 Stars! And a new FAVORITE!

My Thoughts WOW, I could relate to this book! You see I am 44 and have just celebrated my 20th wedding anniversary. I only have one child, a son, who is slightly older than Alice's son. My husband and I have recently hit some potholes in our marriage. I felt like Melanie Gideon was spying on my circumstances!

I loved how the author used the internet, google, facebook, etc to emphasize where Alice was coming from. I could relate so totally to Alice on just about every level...and I suspect I am not alone. Technology is an amazing thing and it can bring people together but this story reiterates that it can also have an opposite effect. Alice and her husband William have drifted apart and the technology initially used to communicate has become a shield to hide behind. Something I find myself doing as well. And their marriage is suffering from a breakdown in communication.

William is mostly, only seen through Alice's eyes, which isn't great to start out with. But through the survey questions (in the kindle version, I didn't realize the questions were listed at the very end of the book, just before the acknowledgements), we see how the relationship started, grew, and changed...all through Alice's memories. I only read the answers to the questions, which was part of the fun...trying to figure out what the questions were Alice was answering. Some were obvious, others not so obvious. I'm going to have to reread her answers with the questions in front of me.
This book was a wake-up call for me, in that I saw a lot of myself in Melanie. Gave me a lot to think about in terms of my relationships with those around me.

Just loved "Wife 22", Gideon has an engaging and imaginative story telling style that completely captured me. The writing was laugh out loud funny, without being mean or snarky. She can turn a witty phrase I tell ya! I am so looking forward to more from Melanie Gideon.
Fun book- really liked the main character’s quirky ness. She’s in my age group so I enjoyed feeling less alone in my life journey. Using the questionnaire to explain her back story was a unique approach. The change in typeface helped with transitions from real life to her online obsession. There were parts that made me laugh out loud but I never teared up. My only critical note is that her kids just didn’t have much genuine depth...but then few teenagers do.
This won’t become a classic but it reveals the need for FaceTime Over Facebook conversations to keep relationships strong. Wife #22 becomes attracted to a counselor who is responding to her answers to a survey. He seems to want to know all about her needs, her desires, her likes and dislikes especially concerning her marriage and family. It’s an interesting way for the writer to give us anecdotes that string together almost like a conversation that move the story along. She loves telling her stories and we love reading them and wonder how her life will be changed by this survey participation. You’ll see.
This was a boring post about a woman who had a dull life and a marriage that had minimal excitement and a husband who lost his job who is equally uninteresting. The woman posts Facebook updates the way people did years ago when first using Facebook. She agrees to take a never ending survey on marriage. The woman is glad for someone taking interest in her dull life and befriends in an anonymous way, the survey taker.
The woman also semi jokes too often that her son is gay and her daughter has an eating disorder thinking this makes her more interesting? All in all, a painful read.
Alice Buckle's marriage is in trouble, and nothing in her life is going right. She signs up to be a subject in a marriage study, and is given questions, a few at a time, that encourage her to discuss all the issues she sees as problems between herself and her husband. With the study as a background, the reader meets Alice's friends and family as the marriage slides into danger. Cleverly done, serious and funny, a very satisfactory read!
Was this book predictable? Yes. Yes, it was.
But maybe because of where I am in my life, this book resonated a million times over with me. It was a sweet, clever, enjoyable read.
