A fast, absorbing read. I bought the book because I knew (and even dated a bit) his father in college. His father was a fine young man who went on with his late wife to raise a fine son in Owen. The book is about 2010's 100-year flood in the Nashville and Middle Tennessee area that was monumental. My sister was stranded in her little community that was surrounded by water. We were frantic until we finally received the news that she was safe. A dear friend lost her home forever to the flood. I scoured the photos online for days, often seeing neighborhoods I recognized from the many years I had lived in Nashville, including one photo of my former duplex with water up to the top step. Owen Grimenstein has done a very good job of putting you there in the flood with him and his family. I picked it up and read it in one sitting. You probably will, too.

I recommend this book highly. It will restore your faith in humanity, and make you wonder what you would do in the same situation. Dot Fowler, Birmingham, AL

We moved to Nashville a year ago and had little knowledge of the storm. I read this book to gain insight and understanding for what my new city went through. The book taught me so much. Reading it was an emotional journey for me. Owen does a great job sharing his experience that is tragic and heartbreaking yet hopeful. I cried tears of sorrow and joy and am grateful for this book as it gave me a personal, yet fact based account of the events. A must read for anyone to learn about the storm and hear a great story of the strength of a man, his family and community. Highly recommend! I couldn’t put it down!
Underwater A Natural Disaster Memoir by Owen Grimenstein is a beautifully written story of his and his family's experience as they lost their home and almost everything they owned in the Nashville, TN flood of 2010. I had a hard time putting this book down! Tears came as I relived his and his family's (and many, many other Nashvillians) pain. But, I was also encouraged and blessed reading about people coming together to serve, love, and help as they were so greatly needed. Beautiful story - heartbreaking and encouraging all at the same time.
I lived in Florida for many years and had knowledge of damage and heartbreak after hurricanes. I was a resident of Nashville when this flood took place. While I personally was not affected, I know many homes and businesses were destroyed. Owen Grimenstein shares his very personal story in a heart wrenching account of the 2010 flood and losing his home. I think this book will give readers an insight into what people endured during this flood. I also think it gives hope and encouragement to those who might be in similar circumstances via flood, fire, or other disaster to see that there is a way out of the dark tunnel of loss. Well done, Mr. Grimenstein.
This book blew away my expectations. I expected this book to talk about the horrors associated with living through a natural disaster, how the community responded and how the government could have done more. Fortunately, it was not that drab. From the sprinkling of facts to the flow of the narrative this book quickly became one of those books you just can't put down. Kudos to the author for conveying his experience in such a way to elicit similar emotions in me while reading the book. This was a great read; you won't be disappointed especially if you have connections to the area.
Wait! Nashville had a major flood in 2010?! Yeah, we did. There was very little national news coverage of this event beyond our own local news programs and areas surrounding us. Luckily, we (my now husband and I) didn't have any major damage beyond a flooded basement. The author, however, lived in what was considered "ground zero" of the flood. The written account of his (and his family's) personal experience before, during and after the flood are eloquently laid out to not only give the reader the facts of what happened but also experience the emotional turmoil of living through a natural disaster. I laughed, cried and often found myself thinking, "yeah I would have done that stupid thing too" or "how would I have handled this situation?" throughout the book.

This book was an easy read. I read it in a couple of hours. Maybe I breezed through it because I had some experience and personal connection to the flood and the Nashville area? Despite my own personal connection to this story, I believe anyone who has gone through a natural disaster can read this book and feel a personal connection to the author's story. Even if you haven't -- It doesn't hurt to read accounts like this because you never know when you may find yourself in the same situation.
Grimenstein does an excellent job of making the flood personal while at the same time, sharing stats and stories of others effected too. As someone who lived through the Nashville flood, I appreciated hearing all that happened, when it happened because we were without power and had no idea what was happening around the city until waters receded and we could get out of our neighborhood. The book is also a great testament to the love and support I have heard echoed from many flood victims.
While there is much to be read about the historic Nashville Flood of 2010, this book is unique in that it relates such a personal story set in the midst of this devastation. It's too easy to look at an event from afar and not really connect to it; however, Owen Grimenstein's memoir of his personal experience during the flood and the days, weeks, and months following gives insight to how this event affected so many lives. It is captivating to read as he maneuvers through flooding roads, narrowly escapes his own home with his family, and returns to witness the devastation after the rain has stopped. He also shares stories of how the Nashville communities joined together to rebuild the city and care for its people. The historic facts, told in such a personal way, makes this book a treasure.
