Thanks to my daughter I was introduced to this work, which she has read three times. The first time was at age 15. Most regrettably, until a month ago, when she emailed me certain passages of this book, which do largely track certain aspects of her life, I had never heard of Amélie Nothomb. Seems that I am one more American rube, since I’ve been told that she is quite famous in Europe, with an entrenched spot on the media circuit. Over ten million copies of this work have been sold. Nothomb’s novel has been translated into English, with a rather different title: The Character of Rain: A Novel. The cover is haunting, with those fixed brown eyes of a young girl, which did remind me of my own daughter’s same eyes, at the same age. What is life all about, and what will it bring, those eyes seem to ask.

God is a tube, proclaims the author. She explains the three primary functions that god performs. What was before? And what was created? As the title states, at least the French title, it is a bit metaphysical. A very precocious child who is the author is the narrator of the story. She does not speak until she is more than two years old. Part of this is deliberate. It reminded me of Gunter Grass’ The Tin Drum in which the child decides to reject adulthood by not growing. But that is only one of the themes in the narrative. Another involves her beloved “au pair,” Nishio-san, who is far more important to her than her parents, and who “coddles” her, for when a child is under three, they too are “gods.” And there are the themes involving water and death, accidental, and not so.

The time-period is 1967-70. The narrator’s father is a Belgium diplomat, with his first station being Osaka, Japan. As yet another narrative thread, he immerses himself into the culture, learns the language, sings in “No” plays, but can’t dance. The mother is in the deep background, but delivers the devastating news: Although you were born in Japan, we will not live here forever. Your father will be reassigned to another post someday. We will leave, and you will have to say good-bye to your beloved Nishio-san. I felt that Nothomb provided some excellent insights into that seemingly incomprehensible event for a young child: leaving your comfortable home, forever, and losing your principal human support. As Nothomb proclaims: “What you love, you are going to lose; what has been given to you will be taken away.” And that situation strongly paralleled my daughter’s, who was born in Saudi Arabia, and left at the age of three (but she did get to go back for a number of years!)

Further on though, the author delivers another message that should be taken to heart: “Who does not advance, retreats. There is the growth, and then the decrepitude, between the two, there is nothing. The apogee, it does not exist.” Indeed, one must keep moving forward, embracing the new challenges in life, with just a fond memory of Nishio-san, and the days of childhood.

Nothomb has written an important work on early childhood, of fixed reference frames, and an imaginative take on a young child dealing with the adult world. I thank my daughter for introducing me to one of Europe’s “literary stars.” 5-stars for a novel read thrice, by my daughter.

Funny yet profound. One of the best books that you would like to read over and over again and still be fascinated by it.

So far for me the best, more enchanting Nothomb, funny, profound, poetic, wonderfully written. If you can, read it in French.
I wonder how some episodes can be translated in English and not loose their splendor!
I needed this book for my kids. They have to read it for their French school (we are French).

Did they like it ? I don't know... But I suppose they like it as all students who must read books...
I really liked this book. I am not truly fluent in French, but Nothomb's style is very accessible. There is an English translation.
This is a great book for a third year student (a student who has gotten through the majority of french grammar but needs some reading experience). The only thing to watch out for for new french learners is that Nothomb does not use passe compose, she uses passe simple, which is not used as much in French anymore but is easy to learn. Overall, the book is just challenging enough without being too difficult to grasp.

Content wise, this book is very funny. Nothomb puts in a lot of sarcasm and humour in depicting her life as an infant and toddler. This book is sure to create a lot of chuckles even though the character may seem quite eccentric at times.
