I really think that the reviews on this book are too critical and way to harsh. I read all of the reviews before I decided if it was worth my time and in all honesty I probably would not have bothered with it if it hadn't been free. And then I would have missed out on another great book from Mary Connealy. I have loved everything that I have read from her and this was no different. Is Julia bossy and occupied with fossils? Yes. But there comes a point in the story where she realizes why she has been so bent in her explorations. She realizes that it has all been in an attempt to obtain her father's love and approval. And when she is torn between following Rafe into the cave or staying put like he tells her too, I think it shows the author giving her character a growth spurt when she chooses to fiddle with a fossil instead of following. But these reviewers don't say that. They just bash the character to pieces. The story is nowhere near as bad as most of these reviews make it out to be. I'd hate for someone to pass up this book on account of these reviews. There is room for growth and the way Miss Connealy has written this book, I suspect that we will be seeing more of these characters in the next book and maybe we will see the continued growth of these two characters. For while they did tend to have a bossy side (they were both pretty bossy all in the sake of trying to help the others) and Julia was a little obsessive about the fossils, they don't deserve to be bashed to death by bad reviews. They had their flaws, but they also had a depth that Mary Connealy did a wonderful job bringing to the surface. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Miss Connealy's wit was still there, even though most reviews said otherwise. It wasn't as dominant as in some of the other books I've read, but it was there.
And I'd also like to comment on some of the reviews that talked about how horrible Julia was to Seth. I understood her attitude. It seemed clear to her that he was the one who had left her in the cave to die. Rafe understood that. But she still showed Seth compassion after one of his nightmares. And Julia was only concerned for Audra and Maggie because Seth was acting a little loco. Who could honestly blame her?
All things considered, if your reading this review and your vacillating about reading the book, by all means give the book a chance. It really is a good book and I can't wait to get started on the second book of the series.

Out of Control The Kincaid Brides Book #1 edition by Mary Connealy Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

The story began when Julia met Rafe in the cave. Julia loves fossils and gathering heaps of them for samples. Her favorite place to excavate is at a cave on Rafe’s property. Rafe is a man haunted by his past. When he met Julia at the cave, sparks start to flicker and romance is in the bloom.
Mary Connealy writes beautifully. Her plots are well thought of and the characters have their own quirky sides that make them unique. While I feel the story is a bit rushed, she made up for it with good plots and scenes readers would enjoy. Her writing style is easy to read. You’ll be amaze how fast time flies when you’re flipping through her book. It’s an enjoyable read that’s perfect over coffee on a weekend.
My favorite character is Julia. She was well described in the book. Julia’s obsession with fossils is understandable because it only means she’s her own person with her own interested. I never did like books where men boss women around. Julia has spunk and character that matches well with Rafe’s strong personality.
If you’re into western romance with a lot of twists and drama, this book is a good choice to get you started. A the best, you’ll love it and at the worse? Well at least you got it for free! You could never go wrong with a free ebook. Enjoy!
I could barely finish reading this book, kept hoping it would improve or even out but no. The romantic leads were terrible. They each consider the other half witted for a chunk of the book. Julia was unbelievably annoying - she's supposed to be smart and independent but she's so singularly focused on going into the mine that she doesn't care a potential killer is hiding in there. She whines and stomps her foot through most of the book. The author hints excessively at the terrible incident in the mine when the boys were younger. I assume it was intended to build suspense to the big reveal at the end but it was just annoying - way overdone. Who wants to read a romance where the main characters are unlivable to the reader, don't like each other, but everything gets a happy but unfinished ending. Even at the happy ending (being married) both characters are plotting how to control their new spouse.

It's not worth reading even at a free price tag - read Karen Witemeyer, Janette Oke, or Serena B Miller instead.
